Amy Mathews

Amy Mathews (born 26th March 1979) [1]played Dr. Rachel Armstrong from 2006 to 2010.

Biography[]

Amy was born in Melbourne but grew up in Sydney. After leaving school, she was offered a scholarship at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. After completing the course, she returned to Australia and enrolled in a two-year acting course in Surry Hills, Sydney,. Here, she met actor Jon Sivewright who later went on to play her on-screen husband Tony Holden on Home and Away.

Passionate about theatre, she performed in productions both in Australia and in Singapore. She was first seen on TV in 2001 when she made a guest appearance in the short-lived television series Head Start. Before landing the role of Rachel Armstrong on Home and away, she made guest appearances in shows such as Always Greener, Blue Heelers, Love Bytes, All Saints and the British series Jeopardy. Between jobs she waited tables. Just before landing the role of Rachel Armstrong on Home and Away, she was cast in the low-budget Australian horror film Gabriel. Amusingly, the film's director asked that no actors who reminded people of soap operas be cast in the film. Amy and fellow Home and Away Michael Piccrilli (James Fraser) slipped through that particular net!

Home and Away[]

Amy joined the cast of Home and Away at the beginning of 2006 and remained on the show until 2010. In 2007 she won a Logie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent. She left in 2010 because she wanted to move on and try new projects. [2]

After Home and Away[]

Amy worked largely on stage after leaving Home and Away, though she continued to pop up in guest roles on TV. These included appearances in Packed to the Rafters, Rescue: Special Ops, A Place to Call Home, The Claremont Murders and The Twelve.
