Prisoner (known as Prisoner Cell Block H overseas) was a long-running prison soap set in the fictional Wentworth Detention Centre, near Melbourne. It first aired in 1979 and ended in 1986. It was unusual for the time because it was the first Australian TV series to feature a mainly female cast. It bore the slogan "If you think prison is hell for a man, imagine what it would be like for woman!". The series gained a cult following which continues to this day. So much so that it was rebooted as Wentworth (2013-2021). Because it was a prison drama, the scope for characters to come and go was enormous. And so, many Australian actors and actresses worked on the show. Some were cast on a number of occasions over the years, as different characters. Some of Prisoner's better remembered characters found their way to Summer Bay, including Fiona Spence (Celia Stewart) who played prison warder Vera "Vinegar Tits" Bennett and Maggie Kirkpatrick (Jean Chambers/Viv Standish )
