Backstory[]
Finlay Roberts was born in 1974, the middle child of Murdoch and Irene Roberts. She had a younger brother Damian and an older brother Nathan. Their father was a lousy father and the mother Irene was an alcoholic. Life at home became very difficult when Irene went on one of her drunken benders. In those days, Irene was a much more mean-spirited character than she is today.
1991-1994[]

Fin and Haydn (1994)
In 1991, Finlay ran away from home because she could no longer bear living with Irene. Penniless and with nowhere to live, she ended up in Summer Bay. She was taken in by Pippa and Michael Ross and lived with them for most of her time in the area. She quickly got a job working in the Bayside Diner and continued to work there for quite some time. A few months after her move out of home, she persuaded her younger brother Damian to leave too. He was eventually fostered by the Rosses. Her older brother Nathan came to live briefly in the area towards the end of 1993 but she wasn't close to him.
Although Finlay was generally a sensible character, she could be a bit self-righteous and uptight. She was very protective of her younger brother Damian and despaired of his friendship with Shane Parrish. She later stuck up for Adam Cameron after he accidentally killed Bobby Marshall in a boating accident. She battled an addiction to uppers when trying to cram for her HSC and it was her mum Irene who came to her rescue. She was also supportive of Sophie Simpson when she realised she was pregnant.
Fin's time with the Rosses nearly came to an end when she rebelled and dated a surfer who Pippa and Michael disapproved of. She later got together with Blake Dean but it was a classic rebound relationship. He was still grieving from the loss of his girlfriend Meg Bowman. They became an item again in 1993, which led to some catty clashes with Blake's sister Karen who had just been released from prison. The relationship was cut short when Blake moved away to the city to help Karen rebuild her life. In what could be described as the 1990s version of being dumped by text, Blake broke up with her by letter.
In 1994 Finlay moved out of Summer Bay House and in with Irene. She had a brief relationship with Haydn Ross, which was something both Pippa and Irene had reservations about. Haydn's gambling addiction proved to be the number one love of his life and he skipped town, leaving her with nothing but a letter and a broken heart. Now somewhat adrift and having been disappointed by her HSC results, Finlay decided to take up a course in The City and moved away.
1996-2006[]
Finlay came back to Summer Bay in 1996 to ask Irene to be a surrogate mother for her. She was now in a relationship with a guy called Barry Michaels but had suffered a miscarriage. They had been told she could not have children. Irene agreed to the request and became pregnant with a boy who was later called Paul. Unexpectedly, Fin became pregnant with a child of her own - Mark. Paul was abducted but later returned to Fin.
Fin is now a successful restaurateur and is believed to have had at least one more child since then. She hasn't been seen on Home and Away since 1997.
