Backstory[]
Gregory Marshall was born in 1966. When he was 17 or 18, he had a short-lived romance with Jackie Nicholls. Jackie became pregnant with their son Sam. Too young and immature to be a dad, Greg bailed, leaving Jackie to try and raise their son alone. Jackie struggled with single motherhood and came to the attention of Social Services. Sam got caught up a cycle of being fostered, returned to his mum, fostered again, returned to his mum again... In 1991, Sam was fostered by Bobby Simpson. By now Greg had matured and was working as a long-distance truck driver.
1991-1993[]
In 1991 Greg travelled to Summer Bay, hoping to meet his son again. Sam was delighted to meet his dad and the pair quickly bonded. Bobby was quite hostile towards him because she was afraid he would take his son away from her. Her nightmares came through when Greg decided to file for custody of Sam. Thankfully, peace broke out and he began to get on better with Bobby. This soon turned to romance and they became a couple. Greg proposed to Bobby via a pre-recorded videotape message (yes, young upstarts, this is what tech-savvy oldies did in the era before social media!) and she said yes. They married in 1992. They bought The Beach House off Marilyn who had by then moved away.
Greg took a job with Michael Ross in the Boat Shed. At the beginning he was a good employee but his insecurity about how much money he was earning drove him to take a second job. Greg took a job as a bread delivery man but had to give it up when it began to impact on his job at the boat shed.
His marriage to Bobby came under strain when she took local tearaway Tug O'Neale under her wing and moved him into their house. Greg never really liked Tug but felt he had to grin and bear it. In 1993, his father-in-law Donald Fisher took on a new housekeeper called Fiona Harris, Greg felt drawn to her and the pair had a short-lived affair with her. Wracked with guilt, Greg told Bobby about the affair. She threw him out and Fiona moved away. Eventually, Bobby eventually forgave him and they reconciled. Shortly afterwards, Bobby was killed in a motorboat accident. Greg said his last goodbyes to her in the hospital and her life support machine was switched off.
In the aftermath of Bobby's death, Greg struggled with being a single father. Things were not helped by his anger towards Adam Cameron, the person who had been driving the motorboat on that fateful day. Somewhat adrift, he decided to return to his old job as a long-distance truck driver. He left Sam in the care of his father-in-law Donald Fisher. When Donald struggled to cope with raising Sam, Greg gave permission for him to be fostered by the Rosses in Summer Bay House. Greg also had a say in where Bobby's share of the Bayside Diner went to. Cutting his last ties with Summer Bay, he sold the Beach House to Irene Roberts. He continued to stay in touch with Sam offscreen and was sometimes referred to by Donald or Pippa and Michael.
2000[]
Greg continued to work as a long-distance truck driver. He went on to meet somebody else and got engaged to her. Although he still kept in contact with Sam, he wasn't always the most reliable of fathers. In 2000 he travelled to Summer Bay and asked Sam to come live with him and his fiancée. By now, Sam was back living with Donald but was feeling insecure about their relationship. He was conscious that he wasn't related to Uncle Donald and felt that he was only in his home because he had nowhere else to go. Eventually, Greg admitted that although he'd love to spend more time with Sam, his job was still going to take him away from home a lot. Sam decided to stay with Donald. Disappointed, but understanding where Sam was coming from, Greg left town. He hasn't returned since.
