Kate Ross was the estranged daughter of Michael Ross. She was one of two children he had with his first wife Cynthia. Although she was referred to at various times during Michael's time in Summer Bay, she never came to visit.
It is unclear what age Kate was but she seems to have been older than her brother Haydn. When her parents marriage broke up, she blamed Michael for it and cut contact with him. In 1990 she and Cynthia took an extended overseas holiday and travelled to Switzerland. She remained in Switzerland when her mother returned to Australia in early 1991. Cynthia travelled to Summer Bay hoping to reconcile with Michael. When it looked like the Rosses were going to give things another go, Kate softened her position. She acknowledged Michael in a letter she sent to her mother.
When her parents' attempted reconciliation didn't work out, Kate cut Michael out of her life again. Later, Michael confided in Pippa that he had "lost a daughter" when his marriage and business had gone under.
Personality-wise, Kate seems to have taken after Cynthia. Certainly, some of the comments Michael made about her could equally have applied to her mother.
