Backstory[]

Lance Smart was born in 1968 to Les and Colleen Smart. Lance was their only child. As he grew up he became friends with fellow Summer Bay resident Martin Dibble and the two cheeky youngsters caused havoc in the Bay with their pranks. They went to school with Gary Samuels. In 1985 Donald Fisher expelled them from Summer Bay High School.

1988-1990[]

Lance and his friend Martin Dibble worked for Clive Fisher at his oyster farm. The two delinquents terrorised Summer Bay with their wind ups and pranks. In January 1988 they teased Carly Morris and Bobby Simpson and Carly released the handbrake on their truck. It rolled down the hill and crashed into Walter Bertram's car as he was backing out of the school. Clive fired them. Lance and Martin's get rich quick schemes rarely worked and often ended up in disaster. In February 1988, they worked for tyrannical Sam Barlow on the road gang, and Sam wanted to show them what working really was. However, in July 1988, Lance won $500'000. He bought his first home but to everyone's amusement (and some bewilderment) he bought a mobile home for himself rather than a house that he could've afforded (1988 really was a different country, wasn't it?). He also bought fast cars and became known as "The Bank Of Lance" by Summer Bay residents who kept looking for loans. He was also scammed by Gary Samuels who duped him into investing in a non-existent nightclub. Soon Lance was broke again.

In 1989 Lance began a relationship with Marilyn Chambers and brought her to Summer Bay. You may have heard of her. In an unlikely turn of events, Lance became part of a manufactured pop group called Image. Marilyn and Martin were also in the group and they were managed by Stacey Macklin and her friend Nina Olivera. They had a hit single but Lance disliked how Nina was manipulating him. He also began to have second thoughts about being a pop star, so he sabotaged the band on live TV. After this, Lance and Celia set up a hot dog stand but it didn't work out.

In 1990 Martin joined the army. Lance and Marilyn split up and he decided to follow his best friend into the army too. Some years later, his mother Colleen revealed that he was now an army sergeant. He said a tearful goodbye to young Sally Fletcher, who he had become close friends with.

2000-2006[]

Lance returned to Summer Bay in 2000 for Sally Fletcher's surprise 21st birthday party. He helped rescue some refugees while he was there. By now he had been discharged from the army and had married a woman called Debbie. Unfortunately Colleen took a dislike to her daughter-in-law. During a disagreement with her, Colleen took a turn. Debbie thought she was faking things but Lance correctly realised that it was genuine.

In June of the same year, Lance returned on the eve of Sally's wedding to Kieran Fletcher. Martin had also come back for the stag and just like in the old days, they got steaming drunk. After it was revealed on the day of the wedding that Kieran was cheating on Sally, Lance comforted her.

In 2001 Lance returned with his young daughter Maggie. He had split up with Debbie. Debbie followed Lance to the Bay and they reconciled.

Lance came back in 2002 to help celebrate Summer Bay's 150th anniversary. The event didn't run smoothly (surprise surprise!) and the area was hit by a huge storm. A group of residents were shipwrecked and Lance helped search for them.

He made further returns to attend Sally's wedding to Flynn Saunders, to be godfather at her daughter's christening and for Alf Stewart's 60th birthday party. He returned briefly in 2006 to star as one of the three wise men in his mother's Nativity play.

In 2013 he and his family moved to Las Vegas. They were joined by Colleen who had decided to retire and move on from summer Bay.
