Backstory[]
Les married Colleen Smart (neé Hickie) in 1965. They had their son - Lance - in 1968. Les worked on a council road gang but at heart he was a workshy layabout with a roving eye. One of his nieces was Narelle Smart, who lived in Summer Bay for a time in 1988.

Stan Smart (1988)
Les* was seen briefly in 1988, just after Lance won $500,000 on the lottery. By now he was spending most of his time in the pub and it didn't look like his marriage to Colleen was going too well. He convinced Lance to loan him $50,000. As soon as he got the money, he split up with Colleen and skipped town with Doris from the pub on his arm. Colleen was devastated and insisted on moving in with Lance. In 2000 Les resurfaced. He was now broke, homeless and looked like a vagrant. Colleen mistook him for a prowler when she saw him outside her mobile home and hit him. When she learned Les was going to leave again, she had a change of heart. She agreed to give him another chance but insisted he get a job. Les's head might've changed since 1988 but it soon became clear that nothing else about him had. He began to see Rhonda Davies (a guest at the Caravan Park) behind Colleen's back. He also lied to Colleen and told her that he had got an executive job with the council. He asked Colleen to loan him some money to buy new clothes. She made the fatal mistake of showing him the hiding place for the tin where she was saving up money for a holiday. Once Colleen went to work, Les made good his escape. By the time Colleen found out that his new job was a fiction it was too late. She learned from Rhys Sutherland that he had left town, not only with her money but with Rhonda on his arm. "At least he's consistent" she grimly observed.
