Lynn Davenport

Lynn Davenport was first seen in the Pilot Episode (Jan 1988) and was one of the children fostered by Tom and Pippa Fletcher. Arguably she's best known these days as being the first regular cast member to leave. She was last seen in August 1988 (Episode 159). She was played by Helena Bozich.

Backstory[]

Lynn Davenport was born in 1973 to Barry and Janet Davenport. She was the youngest of five children. Her parents were very religious and had more children than they were able to cope with. Lynn was neglected so she was taken into foster care. She stayed with a number of families and built up a history of running away when things didn't go well for her. Eventually, she ended up with Tom and Pippa Fletcher and seemed to be more settled.

Along with the rest of the Fletcher family, Lynn moved to Summer Bay. At times she struggled to fit into her foster family because she was very religious and the others weren't on the same wavelength as she was. After Tom and Pippa reluctantly put her newly adopted dog Eric to sleep, she ran away from home (Episode 11). She made it as far as a nearby farm run by an elderly Greek lady called Mrs Pappas and her grandson Nico. Nico had some learning difficulties and was cruelly nicknamed Dummy by some of the locals. Lynn befriended Nico and became quite protective of him during the troubles that kicked off for him shortly afterwards. When Donald Fisher tried to have Nico put away into full-time care, Lynn refused to comply with his wishes.

In July 1988, Lynn's parents made contact with social services and asked if she could be returned to them. At first, Lynn was distraught because she had been burned by her parents' previous antics and wanted to stay with the Fletchers. She didn't have much choice in the matter and she admitted to Pippa that part of her wanted things to work out for her at home. In Episode 127, Lynn returned to her real parents. She returned briefly in August 1988 (Episode 157) for baby Christopher Fletcher's naming ceremony. That turned out to be her final visit to Summer Bay.

Lynn seems to have been written out of the series because of the size of the cast and perhaps because the writers didn't quite what to do with the character. Certainly she had had some interesting storylines and it'd be easy to argue that her early exit was a bit harsh. At the time, producers said "because of the size of the cast, some actors get 'lost', and don't appear on screen for long". Lynn continued to be mentioned in passing by some of the characters. It appears that her return to her parents went well and that she didn't stay in touch with her old foster family. Pippa said in the late 1990s that she was no longer in touch with Lynn.

Along with Neville McPhee (played by the late Frank Lloyd), Lynn is the only original character not to have made a return visit to Summer Bay. Helena Bozich dropped out of acting after this and has never appeared in any Home and Away related interviews or documentaries.
