Backstory[]

Matt Wilson was born around 1970 and grew up in Summer Bay. He had an older brother called Shane but he was shot dead by Al Simpson in 1981. The truth about Shane's death didn't come out until 1990. Like many kids in the area, Matt was a keen surfer. He attended Summer Bay High School, where he was still a student when Home and Away began. By this time, actor Greg Benson was 20 and Matt looked way too old to be still in school!

1988-1990, 2002[]

In his final year at school, Matt was a classmate of Bobby Simpson, Carly Morris and Roo Stewart. He briefly dated Carly but that fizzled out when his family moved away to the city. His dad had got a job there. Matt returned some months later and found work as a lifeguard. Towards the end of 1990 he began to work as a waiter in the Bayside Diner. He briefly dated Alison Patterson but that didn't last. When Adam Cameron moved to the area, Matt became good friends with him. For a time he lived in the Beach House with Adam and Marilyn Chambers, then he shared a flat with Grant Mitchell.

Perhaps because he was a such a normal, grounded character, Matt was underused. Maybe it's fitting that when he left, he wasn't given an exit storyline. He was last seen dropping out of a surfing trip with Adam because of a hefty car repair bill coming his way. Some weeks later Adam mentioned that he had joined a surfing circuit.

Matt returned briefly for some guest appearances in 2002 along with several other former characters from the show's early years.
