Peta Janossi
Peta Janossi was a regular character in 1999-2000. She was fostered by Joel and Natalie Nash and had a relationship with Edward Dunglass. Peta was played by Aleetza Wood.
Backstory[]
Peta grew up in Summer Bay, of likely Italian descent on her father's side. and was first seen in 1999. She and her brother David lived with their Polish-born grandmother. When their gran died while visiting family in Poland, Peta and David feared they would be put into care and split up. They never reported her death to the authorities and continued to collect her pension.
1999-2000[]
Peta was first seen when classmate Hayley Smith approached her and asked would she be willing to help her participate in a makeover competition. Her new look attracted the attention of Hayley's brother Will and the pair had a short relationship. Meanwhile, Peta and David's attempts to keep their grandmother's death hidden ran into problems when she was summoned for jury service. Peta and Will enlisted an old lady called Annie Matthews to pose as their gran and had Dr James Fraser write a letter saying she was too ill to attend the court. Their ruse almost worked - it was blown at the very end when Irene Roberts unexpectedly turned up. Peta was fostered by the Nashes and her brother moved to The City to work.
In October 1999 Peta met Edward Dunglass. They soon became an item and he helped her stage an unofficial funeral for her grandmother in the local cemetery. Amusingly, the candles they lit there made Colleen Smart think that they were dabbling in the occult. Peta was bothered by his "live for the moment" attitude and love for daring stunts. Peta broke up with him when he dived off Jump Rock but they later got back together.
The reason for Edward's daredevil attitude was the strong likelihood he would develop Huntington's Disease. His father had died from it and already Edward was starting to show minor symptoms. Peta and Edward almost slept together but were caught in the act by Joel. This led to them having an unofficial "marriage" ceremony in the caravan park, after which they did the deed for real. They then moved in with Edward's mother Judith.
Peta supported Edward after his official diagnosis for Huntington's Disease. Once he came to terms with it, he removed his gothic make-up and asked his mother for money from his trust fund. Peta left Summer Bay with Edward, bound for Rome. It isn't known what happened to her after this. When Will Smith returned from visiting them in 2000, he said that Edward's condition was worsening.
