Phil Bryant played by Vince Martin
Phil Bryant was a minor character in July 1992. After a whirlwind romance, he became Marilyn Chambers's first husband and the reason why she left Summer Bay for the first time. He was played by actor/singer Vince Martin.
Backstory[]
Phil was born in 1951 and went on to marry a woman called Barbara. They had a daughter named Toni in 1975. Barbara died a few years later, leaving Phil to raise Toni by himself. He and his brother ran a large ranch, situated over 1,000km from Summer Bay. He and Toni were close but he was an over-protective father.
1992[]
In 1992, Toni enrolled in a student exchange program which included a 4 week stay in Summer Bay. On his way out of town he was involved in a minor car accident caused by Marilyn. Phil had to hang around Summer Bay for a few days while the repairs were carried out. Not wanting to cramp his daughter's style, he didn't tell her at first that he was still in the area. He stayed in the Beach House with Marilyn, Bobby, Greg and Sam. He and Marilyn quickly became close and before leaving for home, they kissed.
When Phil returned shortly afterwards, he asked Marilyn to marry him. They got engaged, though not before both had wrestled with a few obvious issues. The most glaring was the age gap between them; Marilyn was 22 and Phil was 41. He also had a 17 year old daughter who'd have to get used to living with a stepmother who wasn't much older than she was. As expected, Toni was shocked at her father's sudden engagement but she came to terms with it.
Bobby and Ailsa were supportive of Marilyn and wanted her to be happy. Alf, on the other hand, had some choice things to say about their engagement and the age gap between the two. Alf being Alf, he didn't hold back in telling them exactly what he thought. He and Marilyn fell out but just before she left town (Episode 1054) they made their peace. Bobby later attended Phil and Marilyn's wedding offscreen.
1995[]
The marriage ended in 1995 when Phil had an affair with another woman. Marilyn left him and returned to Summer Bay. Phil soon regretted his affair and rang Marilyn, asking for a second chance. Marilyn decided against it and they divorced.
