Backstory[]

Ruth Martha Stewart was born in 1970 and grew up in Summer Bay. In 1985, her mother faked her own death and for many years, everybody believed that she was dead. Now a single parent, Alf spoiled his daughter rotten. She could be conniving and bitchy at times but the true extent of what she was capable of only became apparent in 1988. Around 1987, Alf began to see Ailsa Hogan who had moved to town and was running a shop. She wasn't happy about her father's new girlfriend and wasn't slow about letting Alf know. As a result, he kept his dates with Ailsa low key and tried to hide them from Roo.

1988-1989[]

H&a roo 1988

Justine Clarke as the original Ruth "Roo" Stewart in 1988.

Roo began to secretly date Frank Morgan behind Alf's back and lied to cover her tracks. When Alf found out, he was angry at first but then gave the relationship his blessing. She attended the local high school where she frequently clashed with Bobby Simpson and the Fletcher foster kids. Bobby enjoyed calling her Kanga (Kanga, Roo, geddit?....) and had little time for her. What neither of them knew at the time was that they were first cousins. Bobby found out in 1989 that she was the daughter of Roo's paternal aunt Morag Bellingham.

Roo had never liked Ailsa and when she realised things were starting to get serious between her and Alf she decided to take action. With the help of her devious aunt Morag, she found out that Ailsa had done time in prison for killing her own father. She revealed this publicly at her father's engagement party. Because of her continued awful behaviour towards Alf and Ailsa, Roo was sent to boarding school. There she met Brett Macklin who got her pregnant. When Brett made it clear that he had no interest in supporting her or their child, she decided to resort to Plan B. She wasted no time in seducing Frank and then lied about her child's conception date so he would think he was about to become a father. She and Frank got engaged and it was only on their wedding day that she revealed the truth. They split up, leaving Roo heartbroken.

Roo gave birth to a baby girl who she called Martha. Brett had come back onto the scene after learning that he was now infertile (he had caught the mumps in the meantime) and now very much wanted his child. Desperate, he snatched Martha from the hospital and tried to look after her by himself in the city. Eventually he and Roo accepted that neither of them were ready to be parents and they gave baby Martha up for adoption.

In the meantime, Frank had become romantically involved with Bobby and they married. The marriage didn't last, not helped by Frank being on the rebound from Roo. She and Frank realised they still had feelings for each other and they decided to move away to the City. After this, they moved to New York and stayed together until 1991. Even after they split, Roo opted to stay in New York.

2010-[]

Ruth returned in 2010 after 21 years away. She was now 40. She was married to Harvey Ryan from 2012-2014

2020 -[]

In May 2020 Roo became close to Evan Slater who was her nephew Ryder's father. Evan was dying from Mesothelioma and passed away off-screen several weeks later. Roo travelled to Brisbane to be with him in his final weeks. In August, Evan's twin brother Owen Davidson came to Summer Bay by chance and went on to learn about the sibling he had never met. Roo became romantically involved with Owen but they broke up when they both realised she was still in love with Evan.
