Roy O'Neale

Roy O'Neale was a minor character in Home And Away between 1992 and 1994. He was the estranged father of Tug. Roy was played by Mervyn Drake in 1992 and the late Russell Kiefel in 1993 and 1994.

Backstory[]

Roy and Tug lived on a rough and ready farm. The condition of the farm and his farming methods seemed to extend to his parenting.

1992-1994[]

Roy was first seen in 1992 when Shane and Damian took a shortcut across his land and fell foul of an illegal trap he had put there. He had a heated disagreement with Greg Marshall over the traps and the row escalated. Roy stole some expensive outboard motors from the Norfolk Boatshed and tried to frame Greg for their theft. Roy skipped town and was arrested offscreen and jailed. Roy's sister Mavis briefly moved to the farm to look after Tug. Roy cut contact with Tug while he was in jail, refusing to see him and sending his letters back.

Tug moved to Summer Bay shortly afterwards and turned his life around. Roy was released on parole in 1993 and returned to the area. He tried to convince Tug that he had changed his ways and that they could make a go of the farm. This turned out not to be the case. Roy got really drunk and showed up at a party at the surf club. As well as embarrassing his son, he groped Sarah. The next morning Roy walked away from the farm and from Tug, saying he could never change his ways.
