Shannon Reed

Shannon Reed (née Jones) [1] was a main character from September 1994 (Episode 1555) to August 1997 (Episode 2213). She was fostered by the Rosses. Notably, Shannon was also an LGBT character[2] who had a lesbian affair with an older woman. Shannon was played by Isla Fisher, who has since gone on to have a successful career internationally as an actress and a children's author.

Backstory[]

Shannon's biological mother was politician Katherine Walker, though she didn't find this out until 1996. She was fostered by Elizabeth Reed and lived happily with her, along with her foster brother Curtis Reed. She and Curtis became boyfriend and girlfriend, though Curtis later revealed to Jack Wilson that they'd never become fully intimate. Elizabeth was killed in a car crash in 1994, so Shannon and Curtis found themselves in search of new homes. The pair stipulated that they didn't want to be separated, which made placing them trickier.

1994-1997[]

Shannon was fostered by Pippa and Michael Ross in 1994, while Curtis was taken in by Alf and Ailsa Stewart on the same day. The timing of her arrival to the Ross household couldn't have been worse because Pippa and Michael were on the verge of splitting up (thankfully, this turned out to be temporary). Although she tried to keep her relationship with Curtis a secret, news inevitably got out and ruffled a feather or two. A fiesty redhead, she quickly got on the wrong side of Alf Stewart before the pair called a truce. She and Curtis soon split up and she briefly dated bodybuilder Eric Phillips. That ended when Eric attacked her on the beach. The assault brought back memories of sexual abuse she'd suffered at the hands of an uncle. She began to suffer nightmares and was helped by school counsellor Donna Bishop.

In 1995, Shannon began to babysit for newlyweds Shane and Angel Parrish. She developed a crush on Shane and made an advance on him. Although Shane rejected her, she led Angel to believe that she and Shane had been having an affair. This lie nearly broke up the Parrish's marriage. Shannon's guilt led to her developing anorexia. She and Angel finally got back on OK terms when she saved her from her ex Paul Harris who had been stalking her.

Later in 1995, Shannon invited novelist Mandy Thomas to come stay in Summer Bay. Shannon realised she was attracted to her, though things were complicated by Mandy already being in a relationship with her editor. When Mandy moved away, Shannon began a relationship with Alex Bennett. When this relationship ended, Shannon briefly dated Mandy's brother Geoff who was a sailor on shore leave. After this, she got involved with and moved in with the violent Kye Lyons. Memorably, Kye assaulted Shannon's foster mother Pippa and put her into a coma.

Also in 1996, Shannon lost her foster father Michael when he was drowned. She also found her biological mother Katherine Walker and learned that she saw her as little more than a pawn to further her political career.

Shannon began to date local doctor Lachie Fraser but realised she had a decision to make when Mandy unexpectedly returned to Summer Bay. They spent the night together and Shannon ended her relationship with Lachie. She moved to Paris and it is assumed that it was to be with Mandy.
