Backstory[]
Sophie Simpson was born in 1974, the only biological child of the unpleasant Al Simpson. Her mother died when she was young so she spent a lot of her childhood in care. She eventually went to live with Al but she had a hard life with him. Seeing as Al was a "jailbird, a wife beater and a drunk" (actor Terence Donovan's own description of the character), Sophie was never going to be frequenting flower arranging classes. Inevitably, Sophie became a habitual and experienced shoplifter. She and her father travelled to Summer Bay after his adoptive daughter Bobby sent him an invitation to her wedding.
1990-1993[]
Sophie Simpson and her father Al turned up in January 1990 in Summer Bay. She continued to shoplift from stores in Summer Bay and Yabbie Creek. She also was at the wrong end of her father's fists, something that hadn't started recently. After Al was arrested for the murder of Shane Wilson (older brother of Matt), she was fostered by Tom and Pippa Fletcher. Tom died suddenly shortly afterwards but the two events weren't connected!
One consequence of Sophie's upbringing was that she had never learned how to read. When this was discovered, she overcame her literacy issues with help from her family and her teacher Grant Mitchell. She was later given an award for this at the end of year school prizegiving. By now, Sophie was dating Blake Dean. He was the brother of her best friend Karen. That relationship came to an end when newcomer Haydn Ross came on the scene. Although the pair didn't appear to like each other very much, things got a bit passionate on stage when they starred opposite each other in a school production of Romeo and Juliet. Sophie and Haydn became a couple. That relationship fizzled out after Haydn's dad Michael married her foster mother Pippa a few months later.
Things got rocky at home for Sophie when Pippa and Michael fostered the devious Tracey Turner. She disliked Sophie on sight and played all sorts of mind games and underhand tricks to try and oust her from the family. She almost succeeded but Sophie secretly recorded her using a cassette recorder. She played the tape back to Pippa and Michael and that was the end of Tracey.
In mid-1991, Sophie fell for Donald Fisher's nephew David Croft who was visiting Summer Bay. Sophie was 16 and David was 26. Needless to say, few people approved of them getting together and felt it was a teenage crush that had got out of hand. Was it? Nobody shall ever know. Tragically, David was killed in a car accident caused by Karen Dean. Afterwards, Sophie found out that she was pregnant with David's child. That caused ructions at home and led to her running away to the city. She was eventually found and brought back home. Much to Pippa and Michael's chagrin, she quit school before the baby was born and never went back. Sophie gave birth to a daughter called Tamara and afterwards, decided to try find a job. She got an office job in Yabbie Creek but was sexually harassed by her boss. With encouragement from Pippa, she eventually reported him and he lost his job. It turned out that he had been handsy with quite a few of the girls in the office but they had all been afraid to say anything.
Despite having support from Pippa, who was by now expecting a baby of her own, Sophie really struggled to cope with being a single mum. Eventually, it became so overwhelming for her, she decided to give Tamara up for adoption. She offered her to David's mother Mary who lived in Perth. Mary was only too happy to adopt her granddaughter but at the last minute, Sophie regretted what she had done. With a bit of help from Pippa, Mary and Sophie reached a compromise. Sophie moved to Perth to start a new life with Mary and Tamara.
2002-2005[]
Sophie returned to Summer Bay in 2002 for the 150th anniversary of the bay. She and Blake rekindled their old relationship and she later had their child. She named the boy David. They nearly got married afterwards but Blake stood her up at the registry office.
In 2005 Sophie returned to Summer Bay for Alf's 60th birthday. She resumed her relationship with Blake and they got engaged. It is not known if they married this time. She hasn't returned since.
